to add to my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! this morning, roofers are here doing my office. Beyond the noise, they are just doing it wrong. Water flows downhill dumbasses, not across. Make sure your underlayment game is tight you fuckers, and run it side to side like it was intended to be.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I would be working from home but they will be on my floor installing 6 48x48" skylights next week, so I will be WFH then.

yeah, I had suggested just doing the whole damn roof in I+W with a ridge vent but it was too much. When I did the roof on my house I was able to ridge vent, rafter vent, and vent the soffits so I went over it all with I+W before laying my architecturals. Thing aint ever going to leak!

That's probably a better idea, in all honesty. That far north I'd think the codes would be tougher on I&W. I know in Ohio they make them run 2 courses.

For those of us less knowledgeable, what are they doing wrong in this picture?

1 course is all that is required. If I were a contractor though I wouldnt put my name on anything much less a warranty with less than 2. Now that I am thinking about it I better run out and make sure they are overlapping correctly. This worries me

About to have roofing done on our house. Had 40 year shingles on there, destroyed in 8.
Gotta love Texas hail storms. Supposedly house insurance companies are rethinking the way they do roof coverage here lol!

you are supposed to think of any underlayment as another layer of shingles, meaning overlapping them horizontally, just like shingles, so it is another layer of protection.

ha oh a good hail storm will take a roof out no problem, especially with how often you get them. My girlfriends parents live on an island up here and 35yr achitecturals usually last them about 10. Just heavy on the salt and wind all the time.

Wow, that is some serious lazyness right there. It looks like they are only doing part of the roof for some reason? It's only marginally harder to run it horizontally because gravity isn't helping. What is wrong with them?

Roofing should be thought of as a system. First you lay plywood/OSB as sheathing, then you cover that with a layer of tar-infused paper, which works as a water-resistant barrier until you get shingles on, and also makes it more difficult for water to get to the sheathing if it happens to get under the shingles. At the eaves (low edge of the roof) you run 1 or 2 courses of Ice & Water shield to prevent water from soaking into the sheathing if you get an ice dam backing up from your gutters. Then you nail your shingles down on top of the tar paper (or felt, as it's commonly called), starting from the low edge and working your way up.
As water runs downhill, your best bet for preventing water getting to the sheathing is to start your felt runs at the low edge of the roof, running horizontally, then overlap each course as you work your way up.
In the picture, they're laying the felt vertically. That leaves a good chance for water to seep under the vertical seams.
Yes, the shingles will cover it, but shingles deteriorate over time and can eventually fail. This is a recipe for a leaky roof, eventually.

yeah they are doing it piece by piece, which is fine, weather is touch and go. I would have had a crew out to be done with it in 3 days though. It is going on 2 weeks. I thought I could leave them to frame out the skylights but I am thinking I had better make sure they do that correctly too

how does it take 2 weeks???? A day for removal of old roof, and 2 for install of new roof, 3 days is reasonable for what looks like an easy ass roof. Yeah, it sounds like they need a bit of supervision.

Yeah, we live in the TX Panhandle so it's the storms and high sustained winds/dust.
During the spring/fall we get the fast moving fronts with huge pressure differentials and we'll have 40mph sustained winds with gusts to 60-70. Our house is pretty solid, but it'll make the rafters pop once in awhile.
Here's a haboob that blew in a couple years ago. I was lucky and not on campus when this hit but it was pretty gnarly when the sunlight turned red through the windows and got dark like sunset at ~4pm!

totally easy ass roof. Bring out a crew of monkeys and get the shit done. You only need 3 people who know what they are doing for a job like this, and then just muscle to strip and feed. Morons. How come the fucking Digital Marketing Director knows more about roofing than them?

Down here in NC we don't have I+W required for anything, but I sometimes wonder, given that melt/freeze cycles are probably a better way to get problems. If the temperature's enough lower that there are more cycles...

We just bought our house and had a new roof worked into the contract. I+W shield and a ridge vent, but no soffit vents on the house. It has a gable vent which I'll have to cover up when I install the soffit vents, but I'm pretty excited about having the I+W shielding installed
